Part A - Answer the following questions:                                                                    Mitchel Drake

1.What did Zana describe as the reason for giving the cameras to the children in the beginning of the documentary, i.e.: why didn't she just take the photographs herself?

  • Giving the children camera's made it different, It wasn't her taking pictures of things she thought was important she gave the kids the camera's. They know more about where they live and it can express their creativity, and it makes it that much better.
2.Why is the photographer's point of view or unique voice part of what we consider when we talk about pictures? Can't we simply judge all pictures by the same criteria of good and bad regardless of who took them?

- You can't judge pictures by good and bad depending on how pretty they look, you need to understand the pictures, everyone has different, unique styles, maybe you just don't understand the pictures one photographer puts out.

3. Reflect on what Avijit first says about painting: “I like to draw pictures because I want to express what’s on my mind…I want to put my thoughts into colours.” What does this tell us about him?

-I think Avijit has creativity and he could become a photographer because he could get alot of money off of that and it could help him and his family.

4. Throughout this lesson, the term ‘personal expression’ is used to refer to art, sports, writing, and other activities. How would you define personal expression? How are photography, painting and writing forms of personal expression?

-I would define personal expression as the things you do, and the way you act and the way you express yourself to others, that could include things you like/dislike, your beliefs ect.

  1. How can art (personal expression) serve as a means of educating others about a particular issue?

-Art can show people how bad some issues can be, it could be a natural disaster or even pictures of a third world country. They don't have to witness it firsthand they can just look at the picture and understand.
